Ways to Prevent Wall Condensation

Many homes around the country have walls that develop condensation. The problem gets worse in winter, as colder temperatures attract more moisture from the air. Here are some ways to kick condensation in your dwelling to the curb.

Window mold and mildew

Why Condensation Happens

Condensation occurs when water vapor becomes liquid. It’s triggered when moist air hits cold surfaces in places with high humidity. Condensation is more noticeable in homes in the winter when the heat is turned on. Showering, cooking and even breathing can add moisture to the indoor air.

Condensation Impacts

The long-term effects of condensation can damage your home and result in health problems. Asthma, skin rashes, allergies and bronchitis are among them. The moisture can also lead to black mold on windows and walls, corrosion, mold patches on furniture, and loose nails.

Ways to Stop Condensation

Follow these tips to curb the condensation in your home.

  • Make sure your home is well ventilated to reduce moisture. Open a nearby window while cooking or when taking a hot shower. Use the built-in exhaust fans.
  • Clean the windows. If condensation builds up, it can cause black mold. Use a squeegee to wipe off the moisture.
  • Use a dehumidifier to reduce indoor moisture and prevent condensation on windows and walls.
  • Put a thermostat in each room of your house to ensure a consistent indoor temperature. If a room isn’t being used, close the door.
  • Moisture can get into your home from the outside. Check for damage and cracks on the exterior roof and walls.
  • Properly insulate your walls and windows to prevent the build-up of moisture and condensation.
