Common Drywall & Insulation Mistakes—And How to Avoid Them

Even if you’re familiar with the drywall and insulation process, mistakes can happen.

These can range from minor ones such as incorrect measurements that are off by an inch or two, to more significant ones such as using the completely wrong type of insulation that is not designed for your space.

Here are just a few common drywall and insulation mistakes people make — and how you can best avoid them.

Common Drywall Mistakes

Incorrect Measurement and Cutting

When the drywall is cut too short or too long during installation, it can lead to noticeable gaps and unnecessary patchwork.

While completing the necessary measurements for drywall installation, it is important to measure twice and cut only once using a sharp utility knife for clean cuts and a T-square for accurate measurements.

Over-sanding Drywall Joints

While sanding drywall joints is necessary to create smooth and even surfaces free of high points, sanding too aggressively can wear down the joint compound and damage the proper facing. Instead of relying solely on rough sandpaper, many contractors opt for fine-grit sanding sponges to avoid potentially over-sanding walls.

Common Insulation Mistakes

Leaving Gaps and Compressing Insulation

Even the smallest gaps in insulation can reduce its overall effectiveness. Additionally, compressed insulation loses its insulating properties.

To avoid this, fit the insulation snugly into cavities without compressing it. Use spray foam or caulk to seal small gaps.

Blocking ventilation with insulation

Ventilation in homes is just as necessary as insulation. It removes moisture, pollutants and prevents mold growth. The overuse of insulation in certain spaces like attics can can block airflow, leading to moisture buildup.

During insulation installation, keep vents in the home clear and use baffles to maintain airflow.
