Types of Insulation for Crawl Spaces and Basements

Many crawl spaces and basements lack proper insulation, which can cause significant heat loss, leading to rising energy costs. Properly insulating these areas not only lowers utility bills but also helps prevent mold and mildew growth, which can pose serious health risks.

While there are many insulation options to choose from, it’s essential to use materials that prevent both air leakage and moisture intrusion. Spray foam insulation and rigid foam board insulation provide excellent air sealing and resist moisture. Additionally, they don’t promote mold growth and won’t deteriorate when exposed to damp conditions. Because spray foam insulation and rigid foam board insulation effectively prevent air movement, they perform well throughout both winter and summer. When installed properly along the interior foundation walls of a crawl space, these insulation systems can deliver reliable protection for many years.

Although spray foam and rigid foam insulation may have a greater upfront cost, they typically reduce expenses in the long run by minimizing the need for repairs or replacement caused by damage or poor performance.

Fiberglass batt insulation is typically the least expensive option for crawl spaces, but it comes with disadvantages. It does not create an effective air barrier and can easily absorb water if exposed to moisture, increasing the risk of mold and reducing its overall effectiveness.
