How to Spot and Repair Common Drywall Issues

Even though drywall is a durable material, daily wear and tear can cause cracks, dents, and other damages.

Identifying and repairing these issues early on can prevent even bigger repairs down the road and save you the headache of maintenance work!

Here’s how to spot and repair the most common drywall problems.

Cracks in Drywall

Over time, hairline cracks may appear near the wall corners, ceilings, doors, and windows. The house settling or temperature changes often cause them.

While these cracks may appear to be miniscule at first, they can expand over time, making your walls look as if they have lightning bolts crossing them.

To repair it, slightly widen the crack with a utility knife to remove any loose material. Then, apply mesh drywall tape over the crack and cover up the tape with joint compound in thin layers. Once the area is smooth, paint over it.

Bulging or Sagging Drywall

Moisture damage can make walls appear as if they are swollen or sagging. It can lead to soft spots or paint peeling.

The first step to resolve this issue is identifying the source of the moisture buildup. It could be a leaky rood, pipes, or high humidity in the home.

If they drywall is only slightly sagging, you may just need to secure it with new screws and add joint compound. If the damage is more prominent, remove and replace the affected areas.

Lastly, repaint the areas with a moisture-resistant primer to avoid further damages.

Small Holes and Dents

Small bumps and holes are common in drywall, and are the result of daily wear and tear, furniture bumps, or nails and screws.

Holes can be filled with spackle and dents can be covered with lightweight joint compound using a smooth edge.

Once covered and filled, the areas can be primed and painted over.
